PHP Snippets

Quick Reference

There may be times when you want a specific page (URL) to automatically redirect to a different page before loading. To do so, place the following at the very top of the coded page, before anything else on the page.

This would be used for a temporary redirect.

// redirect the user
header('Location: http://example.com/newpage.html');

// make sure all code below does not get executed
exit;

To perform a permanent redirect (status code 301), you can use the following.

// redirect the user
header('Location: http://example.com/newpage.html', true, 301);

// make sure all code below does not get executed
exit;

Note

It’s important to note that the header() function must be called before any output is sent to the browser.

PHP Notes:

  • When using PHP, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
  • Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on

We’d like to acknowledge that we learned a great deal of our coding from W3Schools and TutorialsPoint, borrowing heavily from their teaching process and excellent code examples. We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
