The SQL Server SUBSTRING() function extracts a specified number of characters from a specified position in a string.
SELECT SUBSTRING('1SMARTchicken', 7, 7) AS Extracted;

SUBSTRING(string, start, length)
Parameters
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
string | The string to extract from (required) |
start | The start position (first position is 1) (required) |
length | The number of characters to extract (required) |
