Quick Reference

The SQL Server QUOTENAME() function returns a Unicode string with delimiters added to make the string a valid SQL Server delimited identifier.

SELECT QUOTENAME('chicken');

Output

[chicken]

Syntax

QUOTENAME(string, quote_char)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
stringA string of Unicode character data limited to 128 characters (required)
quote_charA one-character string to use as the delimiter

  • A single quotation mark ( ' )

  • A left or right bracket ( [] ) - default

  • A double quotation mark ( " )

  • A left or right parenthesis ( () )

  • A greater than or less than sign ( >< )

  • A left or right brace ( {} )

  • A backtick ( ` )

  • Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
