Quick Reference

The SQL Server LEFT() function extracts a number of characters (starting from left) from a string.

SELECT LEFT('Chicken Reference', 7) AS String;

Output

String
Chicken

Syntax

LEFT(string, number_of_chars)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
stringThe string to extract from(required)
number_of_charsThe number of characters to extract; if the number exceeds the number of characters in string, it returns the string (required)

  • Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
