The SQL Server LEFT() function extracts a number of characters (starting from left) from a string.
SELECT LEFT('Chicken Reference', 7) AS String;

LEFT(string, number_of_chars)
Parameters
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
string | The string to extract from(required) |
number_of_chars | The number of characters to extract; if the number exceeds the number of characters in string, it returns the string (required) |
