Quick Reference

The SQL Server FORMAT() function formats a value with the specified format (and an optional culture in SQL Server 2017).

DECLARE @d DATETIME = '04/15/2023';
SELECT FORMAT (@d, 'd', 'en-US') AS 'United States',
    FORMAT (@d, 'd', 'no') AS 'Norway';

Output

United States       Norway
4/15/2023	    15.04.2023

Syntax

FORMAT(value, format, culture)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
valueThe value to be formatted (required)
formatThe format pattern (required)
cultureSpecifies a culture (from SQL Server 2017)

  • Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
