The SQL Server DATENAME() function returns a specified part of a date as a string value.

SELECT DATENAME(year, '2023-04-15') AS Date;

Output

Date
2023

Syntax

DATENAME(interval, date)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
intervalThe time/date interval to add (required)

  • year, yyyy, yy = Year

  • quarter, qq, q = Quarter

  • month, mm, m = month

  • dayofyear, dy, y = Day of the year

  • day, dd, d = Day

  • week, ww, wk = Week

  • weekday, dw, w = Weekday

  • hour, hh = hour

  • minute, mi, n = Minute

  • second, ss, s = Second

  • millisecond, ms = Millisecond
dateThe date to use (required)

SQL Notes:

  • Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
