The SQL Server DATALENGTH() function returns the number of bytes used to represent an expression. The function counts both leading and trailing spaces when calculating the length of the expression.

SELECT DATALENGTH('1SMARTchicken.com');

Output

17

Syntax

DATALENGTH(expression)

SQL Notes:

  • Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
