Quick Reference

The SQL Server ASCII() function returns the ASCII value for the specified character. If more than one character is entered, it will only return the value for the first character.

SELECT customer_name, ASCII(customer_name) AS 'First Character Code'
FROM customers;

Output

Number of Records: 3
customer_name   First Character Code

Alvin Monkey    65
Anne Chicken    65
Antoine Ant     65

Syntax

ASCII(character)

SQL Notes:

  • Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
