Quick Reference
The MySQL SUBSTRING_INDEX() function returns a substring of a string before a specified number of delimiter occurs.
SELECT SUBSTRING_INDEX('1smartchicken.com', '.', 1);
Output
SUBSTRING_INDEX('1smartchicken.com', '.', 1)

Syntax
SUBSTRING_INDEX(string, delimiter, number)
Parameters
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
string | The original string (required) |
eliminator | The delimiter to search for (required) |
number | The number of times to search for the delimiter; if a positive number, returns all to the left of the delimiter; if a negative number, returns all to the right of the delimiter (required) |
