Quick Reference

The MySQL SUBSTR() function extracts a substring from a string, starting from any position.

SELECT SUBSTR('1smartchicken', 2, 5) AS 'String Part';

Output

String Part
smart

Syntax

SUBSTR(string, start, length)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
stringThe string to extract from (required)
startThe start positio; if positive, extracts from the beginning of the string; if negative, extracts from the end of the string (required)
lengthThe number of characters to extract; if omitted, the whole string will be returned (from the start position)

SQL Notes:

  • Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
