Quick Reference
The MySQL LPAD() function left-pads a string with another string, to achieve a specified length.
The following pads the string “Johnny Shay” on the left with the string “kid” to achieve a total length of 20 characters.
SELECT LPAD('Johnny Shay', 20, 'kid');
Output
LPAD('Johnny Shay', 20, 'kid')
kidkidkidJohnny Shay
Syntax
LPAD(string, length, lpad_string)
Parameters
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
string | The original string; if the length of the original string is larger than the length parameter, this function removes the overfloating characters from the string (required) |
length | The length of the string after it has been left-padded (required) |
lpad_string | The string to left-pad the original string with (required) |
