Quick Reference
The CREATE keyword is used to create new databases, indexes, procedures, tables, and views.
CREATE DATABASE
The following creates a database called “sitename_db”.
CREATE DATABASE sitename_db;
CREATE TABLE
The following creates a table called Customers that contains six columns: id_customer, first_name, last_name, address, city, state, country.
CREATE TABLE Customers (
id_customer int,
first_name varchar(255),
last_name varchar(255),
address varchar(255),
city varchar(255),
state varchar(255),
country varchar(255)
);
The following creates a new table called “Users” by copying two of the columns from the Customers table.
CREATE TABLE Users AS
SELECT first_name, last_name
FROM Customers;
CREATE INDEX
The following creates an index named “idx_last_name” on the last_name column in the Customers table.
CREATE INDEX idx_last_name
ON Customers (last_name);
The following creates an index named “idx_full_name” on the combination of the first_name and last_name columns in the Customers table.
CREATE INDEX idx_full_name
ON Customers (first_name, last_name);
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX
The following creates a unique index named “uidx_customer” on the “id_customer” column in the Customers table.
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX uidx_customer
ON Customers (id_customer);
CREATE VIEW
The following creates a view called “Canada Customers” that selects all customers (first_name and last_name columns) from Canada in the Customers table.
CREATE VIEW [Canada Customers] AS
SELECT first_name, last_name
FROM Customers
WHERE Country = 'Canada';
CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW
The following updates a view by adding the city column to the “Canada Customers” view.
CREATE VIEW [Canadian Customers] AS
SELECT last_name, first_name
FROM Customers
WHERE Country = 'Canada';
CREATE PROCEDURE
The following creates a stored procedure named “select_all_customers” that selects all records from the Customers table.
CREATE PROCEDURE select_all_customers
AS
SELECT * FROM Customers
GO;
SQL Notes:
- Any work being done to modify the structure of a database or delete tables or the the database itself should only be done after making a recent backup
We’d like to acknowledge that we learned a great deal of our coding from W3Schools and TutorialsPoint, borrowing heavily from their teaching process and excellent code examples. We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
