Quick Reference

The PHP umask() function changes the file permissions for files.

<?php
$file = 'test.txt';
echo (umask($file));
?>

Output

// sets PHP's umask to mask & 0777 and returns the old umask

Syntax

umask(mask)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
maskSpecifies the new permissions; the mask parameter consists of four numbers (default is 0777):

  • The first number is always zero

  • The second number specifies permissions for the owner

  • The third number specifies permissions for the owner's user group

  • The fourth number specifies permissions for everybody else

Possible values (to set multiple permissions, add up the following numbers):

  • 1 = execute permissions

  • 2 = write permissions

  • 4 = read permissions

PHP Notes:

  • When using PHP, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
  • Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on
