Quick Reference

The PHP sort() function sorts an indexed array in ascending order.

<?php
$my_cars = array('Lamborghini', 'Ferrari', 'Maserati');

sort($my_cars);
print_r($my_cars);
?>

Note

Arrays count starting from zero NOT one. So item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on.

Output

Array ( [0] => Ferrari [1] => Lamborghini [2] => Maserati )

Syntax

sort(array, sorttype)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
arraySpecifies an array (required)
sorttypeSpecifies how to compare the array elements/items:

  • 0 = SORT_REGULAR - Compare items normally (don't change types) (default)

  • 1 = SORT_NUMERIC - Compare items numerically

  • 2 = SORT_STRING - Compare items as strings

  • 3 = SORT_LOCALE_STRING - Compare items as strings, based on current locale

  • 4 = SORT_NATURAL - Compare items as strings using natural ordering

  • 5 = SORT_FLAG_CASE - Can be combined (bitwise OR) with SORT_STRING or SORT_NATURAL to sort strings case-insensitively

PHP Notes:

  • When using PHP, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
  • Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on
