Quick Reference

The PHP json_decode() function is used to decode or convert a JSON object to a PHP object.

<?php
$age = '{"Johnny":11, "Marty":56}';
var_dump(json_decode($age));
?>

Output

// stores JSON data in a PHP variable and then decodes it into a PHP object

Syntax

json_decode(string, assoc, depth, options)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
stringSpecifies the value to be decoded (required)
assocSpecifies a Boolean value; when set to true, the returned object will be converted into an associative array; when set to false, it returns an object (false is the default)
depthSpecifies the recursion depth (default recursion depth is 512)
optionsSpecifies a bitmask:

  • JSON_BIGINT_AS_STRING
  • JSON_INVALID_UTF8_IGNORE
  • JSON_INVALID_UTF8_SUBSTITUTE
  • JSON_OBJECT_AS_ARRAY
  • JSON_THROW_ON_ERROR

PHP Notes:

  • When using PHP, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
  • Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on

We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
