Quick Reference

The PHP ftp_rename() function renames a file or directory on the FTP server.

$ftp_server = 'ftp.example.com';

$ftp_conn = ftp_connect($ftp_server) or die('Could not connect to ' . $ftp_server);
$login = ftp_login($ftp_conn, $ftp_username, $ftp_userpass);

$old_file = 'old-file.txt';
$new_file = 'new-file.txt';

// rename the file
if (ftp_rename($ftp_conn, $old_file, $new_file)) {
    echo 'The file was renamed successfully';
}
else {
    echo 'There was a problem renaming the file';
}

// close connection
ftp_close($ftp_conn);

Syntax

ftp_rename(ftp_conn, oldname, newname)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
ftp_connSpecifies the FTP connection to use (required)
oldnameSpecifies the file or directory to rename (required)
newnameSpecifies the new name of the file or directory (required)

PHP Notes:

  • When using PHP, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
  • Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on
