PHP Reference

Quick Reference

The PHP file() reads a file into an array which contains a line from the file, with the newline character still attached.

<?php
print_r(file('test.txt'));
?>

Output

// reads a file into an array

Syntax

file(filename, flag, context)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
filenameSpecifies the path to the file to read (required)
flagCan be one or more of the following constants:

  • FILE_USE_INCLUDE_PATH - Search for the file in the include_path (in php.ini)

  • FILE_IGNORE_NEW_LINES - Skip the newline at the end of each array element

  • FILE_SKIP_EMPTY_LINES - Skip empty lines in the file

contextSpecifies the context of the file handle; context is a set of options that can modify the behavior of a stream; can be skipped by using NULL

PHP Notes:

  • When using PHP, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
  • Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on
