PHP Reference

Quick Reference

The PHP array_unique() function removes duplicate values (the first appearance will be kept) from an array. The returned array will keep the first array item’s key type.

<?php
$a = array('Car 1' => 'Lamborghini', 'Car 2' => 'Maserati', 'Car 3' => 'Maserati');
print_r(array_unique($a));
?>

Note

Arrays count starting from zero NOT one. So item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on.

Output

Array ( [Car 1] => Lamborghini [Car 2] => Maserati )

Syntax

array_unique(array, sorttype)

Parameters

ParameterDescription
arraySpecifies an array (required)
sorttypeSpecifies how to compare the array elements/items:

  • SORT_STRING - Compare items as strings (default)

  • SORT_REGULAR - Compare items normally (don't change types)

  • SORT_NUMERIC - Compare items numerically

  • SORT_LOCALE_STRING - Compare items as strings, based on current locale

PHP Notes:

  • When using PHP, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
  • Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on
