Quick Reference
The String substring() method extracts characters from a string, between two positions, returning a substring, while not changing the original string.
- If start is greater than end, arguments are swapped: (7, 1) = (1, 7)
- Start or end values less than 0 are treated as 0
<!-- html element to place output -->
<p id="my_output"></p>
Example 1:
// variables
let text = 'Hello World';
let my_result = text.substring(1, 6); // starting at position 1, ending before position 6
// output to the HTML element
document.getElementById('my_output').innerHTML = my_result;
Example 2:
// variables
let text = 'Hello World';
let my_result = text.substring(5); // starting at position 5 until the end
// output to the HTML element
document.getElementById('my_output').innerHTML = my_result;
Note
When counting characters in a string, the count starts from zero NOT one. So character 1 is position [0], character 2 is position [1], and character 3 is position [2] … and so on.
Output
Example 1:
ello
Example 2:
World
Syntax
string.substring(start, end)
Parameters
Parameter | Description |
---|---|
start | The start position; a negative number selects from the end of the string (required) |
end | The end position (not inclusive) (default is the string length) |
JavaScript Notes:
- When using JavaScript, single or double quotation marks are acceptable and work identically to one another; choose whichever you prefer, and stay consistent
- JavaScript is a case-sensitive language; firstName is NOT the same as firstname
- Arrays count starting from zero NOT one; so item 1 is position [0], item 2 is position [1], and item 3 is position [2] … and so on
- JavaScript variables must begin with a letter, $, or _
- JavaScript variables are case sensitive (x is not the same as X)
We’d like to acknowledge that we learned a great deal of our coding from W3Schools and TutorialsPoint, borrowing heavily from their teaching process and excellent code examples. We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
