Quick Reference
The counter() function returns the current value of the named counter as a string. In the following we are creating a counter named “chapter”.
/* uses basic numbers as the counter number */
body {
counter-reset: chapter;
}
h2::before {
counter-increment: chapter;
content: "Chapter " counter(chapter) ": ";
}
/* uses Roman numberals as the counter number */
body {
counter-reset: chapter;
}
h2::before {
counter-increment: chapter;
content: "Chapter " counter(chapter, upper-roman) ": ";
}
In the following example, we have the three titles set, each starting with “Monkeys…”. We use the first CSS example above to add the chapter numbers dymamically.
Chapter 1: Chickens are Cute
Chapter 2: Chickens have Feathers
Chapter 3: Chickens Cross the Road

We’d like to acknowledge that we learned a great deal of our coding from W3Schools and TutorialsPoint, borrowing heavily from their teaching process and excellent code examples. We highly recommend both sites to deepen your experience, and further your coding journey. We’re just hitting the basics here at 1SMARTchicken.
